Medical alert systems allow you to press a wearable call button and connects you with a dispatcher who can contact emergency help or a friend or family member. These systems not only offer reassurance to those who need it, but a strong level of comfort to their friends and loved ones.
“Anyone who is at risk of falling or having a medical emergency” may benefit from such a device, says Leah Bellman, M.S., an occupational therapist and a healthcare process improvement analyst with Commonwealth Care Alliance in Boston, Mass.
Falls are an increasing health issue among seniors. Seniors are at a greater risk of falling during their daily activities than their younger counterparts. Vision impairments, hearing and balance deterioration, medications and general weakness can combine with external and environmental factors which put seniors in danger of falling and injuring themselves, potentially needing emergency medical help, possibly hospitalization.
A senior’s health is a major factor in falls, along with other associated factors such as medication taken and recent surgeries. Environmental challenges related to the loss of strength and balance as people age also make falls more likely, and some demographic factors also contribute.
Notable Statistics:
- Every 11 seconds, an older adult is medically treated for a fall.
- According to the National Council on Aging, one in four Americans over the age of 65 falls each year.
- In 2014, American seniors experienced 29 million falls, resulting in 7 million injuries.
- Every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall
